Getting Referred

There are two ways in which you can be referred to a specialist:

  • Through your Consultant Haematologist – this is the standard route of referral and should be       something your consultant discusses with you following diagnosis

  • Through your GP – Your GP has the option of referring you to a specialist centre of your choice, however this should be used as a secondary route of referral if necessary

If referral to a specialist centre is not discussed immediately after suspicion of AML is confirmed (either newly daignosed or relapse of current disease), do not feel afraid to ask your Consultant Haematologist or GP if they can refer you. Visit '24/72 Campaign' for more advice.

To improve outcomes in AML we must ensure all patients are assessed in line with best practice guidelines. To achieve this, all patients must be referred to one of the UK’s specialist referral centres immediately following diagnosis or suspected disease.
